Managing Information

Information Management continues to be a major issue. The cost of storing data electronically continues to fall, and more and more data and information is stored in data warehouses and data marts. This data is made available through MIS systems, company intranets and portals, but due to sheer volume, it is still difficult to search and locate exactly what you need at any moment. This has an adverse effect in the way an individual performs their job.

Per4m approaches information management from a business performance perspective. By designing high performance business processes that specify which data, information and knowledge is needed at any point in the process, the search issue, with its associated latency and time wasting is minimised. Searching should not be done using search engines, hierarchical tables of contents or index lists. Instead searching is associative to the point of performance and in context with tasks and activities being performed.

Information organised around job activities drives job performance. Information is made available at the point of performance, and, by using a combination of process design and technology, information presentation can appear to be intelligent to the needs of the individual at any point in the process.

Providing information at the point of performance also helps to address many companies' problems of how they encourage individuals to provide relevant and valuable information and knowledge in the first place. Per4m has proven methodologies within their Performance Innovation Methods of minimising the pull back of individuals and making the uploading of knowledge and information an integral and straightforward part of their daily work process.
